OzRunways was founded early in 2010 after pilots and computer programmers Bas Scheffers, Rowan Willson and Neil Weste realised they were independently working towards the goal of bringing flight planning and navigation to the new iPad. Their combined visions included making the cockpit paperless, saving pilots time and money as well as providing them with tools and capabilities never before available.
Soon after the initial release of OzRunways in December 2010, it was clear the pilots of Australia agreed there was a need for this product and development went into overdrive to go from a basic AIP replacement to a full planning briefing tool and moving map navigator. The team were working closely with CASA for OzRunways to become the first approved application of its kind in Australia, making it legal for pilots to use OzRunways as their sole method of obtaining aeronautical information.
Over the years OzRunways pioneered many innovations in Electronic Flight Bags like cellular-based flight tracking that has saved lives, collaborating with the Bureau of Meteorology and Airservices Australia. Together we created our unique interactive graphical briefing tool SmartBrief, intelligent document management that intuitively provides pilots with the charts they need, when they need them and making procedure plates smart by automatically highlighting critical information during approaches.
By employing a team of Australian and New Zealand pilots our solutions have always been sharply focussed on the unique requirements of flying Down Under, based on concepts familiar to local pilots. Our local support team is not only available every day, they also regularly travel to aviation events and aero clubs to present tutorials and assist individual pilots to get the most out of OzRunways.
In 2024, The Boeing Company announced it acquired OzRunways to become part of the ForeFlight family—a fellow pioneer in EFB applications initially focussed on North America and Europe. By this time OzRunways had grown to employ a team of twenty based in Adelaide, as well as around the country, and the world, supporting tens of thousands of customers ranging from recreational pilots to charter companies, emergency services, aeromedical, regional airlines and the Australian Defence Force. Together the combined companies aim to bring more choice to more pilots worldwide by creating a suite of products to suit every segment of the aviation industry.
